A new mystical children’s book, The Zartarbia Tales, is being launched at Kingston’s Borders bookstore on Saturday, October 25.

Author Ana Fischel will sign copies of her first novel in a seven book series, Isabella Zophie and Le Cirque, and will be accompanied by costumed characters, a facepainting artist and a magician.

Even before the book launch, limited editions of the hardback version, complete with 16 illustrations designed by the author, have become collectors’ items.

Ana, 33, who moved to Spain to help her husband Robert convalesce from a serious illness, has been taken by surprise by the clamour for copies of her debut novel. She said: “I expected it to move quite slowly at first, but it has gone in leaps and bounds.

“We are even in talks with a Hollywood producer about rights to translate the book to film. The reaction has been very positive.”

Ana describes he book as a cross between CS Lewis’ Narnia Chronicles, Alice in Wonderland and The Matrix.

The story follows the adventures of lead character Isabella Zophie, who finds a mysterious locket while on holiday at her aunt’s home. When she puts it on it transports her into the mystical land of Zartarbia.

There she is taken under the wing of circus ringmaster Krock-o-Dile, but soon attracts the attentions of the evil Syndicate, who are determined to prise the Locket of Fire and Water away from the child hero.

Each of the Syndicate represent one of the seven deadly sins and Isabella will struggle with a different foe in each of the seven books.

If she succumbs to the Syndicate and they harness the power of the locket they will rule Zartarbia and then, maybe, the world.

Ana explained; “I wanted to write a story for my two daughters, Isabella, who is five, and my 12-year-old step daughter, Lujzka.

“I look at it like a family heirloom, something they can cherish when they are older. My most magical memories of childhood were books and films like Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, James and the Giant Peach and Alice in Wonderland – classic stories that encourage a child’s imagination.

“All children need some escapism and I hope this book is something people enjoy reading as much as I enjoyed writing it.”

Ana has maintained autonomy by signing a self-publishing deal with Kingston-based Pen Press.

Publicity has been helped by a sponsorship deal with jewellery firm Swarovski, which has been commissioned to reproduce the locket worn by the lead character.

The locket is the star prize in an online competition, with 100 runner up prizes of the limited edition hardback edition. Ana has also donated a copy of her book to a host of Kingston schools.

The book launch party will take place from midday to 4pm on Saturday October 23 rd at Borders, Market Place, Kingston.

Copies of Isabella Zophie and Le Cirque de Magique will be available in bookstores from the following Monday (5.99). For details see www.zartarbia.com
